Gelato in Tuscany and Umbria

gelato at Margottini, Chiusi, Siena

Here we are with our best places for a  Gelato in Tuscany and Umbria.

  • Our number 1 is SNOOPY IN CORTONA, Tuscany.  It is located  front of Teatro Signorelli palace, in the heart of the city (Piazza Signorelli). Tel. +39 0575 630197. The smallest one is already big! Don’t forget to taste both cream and fruit!
  • Our second one is ALISE’ a bar that from Spring to fall serve the best gelato of Castiglion del Lago. The location is not the best, front of  Castiglion del Lago train station, but if you are looking for the best pistacchio, or nuts, or ricotta cheese and figs home made gelato, this is the best option close to our villas. Where: Via della Stazione, 5. Never on Monday.

  • If you are in Chiusi station area, you can taste Margottini Gelato (but it was better years before…), you can go there just because is in front of the train station instead of going to the others bar (some dirty).

  • While if you are in Città della Pieve you should go at the patisserie Stefanini in Via Beato Giacomo Villa, 4.
  • Also we like,  L’ARTE DEL GELATO, in Corciano Medioeval Town, closed to Perugia. By April to September they are always opend up to midnight.
  • If you are in Montepulciano. Now outside the sign is DolciVoglie but they will change it into Buon Gusto.  Located in Via Gracciano del Corso 50, at the bottom of the city. For me this is the best gelato of South Tuscany.
  • If you are in Perugia, Umbria, don’t miss GROM (it also located now in NY city!). It is in Via Giuseppe Mazzini, 31. Grom is a great quality gelateria that use slow food selected ingredients. Anyway this year you can find it also at Coop Supermarket…so i think the quality is going down….
  • One of the oldest in Perugia is Gelateria Veneta, at the beginning of Corso Vannucci, on the left of Bata Shoes Shop. We love to eat fresh fruit with ice cream from the morning… I think this is one of the most healthy ice cream in Umbria.
  • Another super ice cream is GELATERIA PASQUALETTI, in via del Duomo, 10 Orvieto, I have tasted chocolate ice cream so divine!! They are really unique and hand made! (Is is quite expensive, pay attention:). https://www.facebook.com/PasqualettiSrl
  • The most historical ice cream is VIVOLI in Firenze, from 1930! It is in Via dell’Isola delle Stinche 7r. – tel. +39 055/292334. Vivoli ice cream is recognized as being unique, made according to tradition; you can recognize its genuine taste and the great quality of the products used. We suggest you go at night, because in the afternoon, especially when the weather is nice, there are lots of people lined up waiting. Don’t go on Mondays, because it is closed; in August there is the risk of not eating it because it can be on holidau (probably 14th of August and closed days). More info at http://www.vivoli.it/
  • If you are in Pienza Buon Gusto Gelateria  at Via Case Nuove, 26,
  • If you are in the city of Rome, the top are Giolitti at via Uffici del Vicario,  http://www.pasticceriagiolitti.com/dove-siamo   This is a very old establishment — it opened in 1900 — and is often voted best ice cream in local polls. When First Lady Michelle Obama took her daughters out for ice cream during the G8 Summit, this is where they went!!
  • And more…Fassi,Il Palazzo del Freddo, in Via Principe Eugenio, 65, off Piazza Vittorio (This is the new china town area of Rome). Fassi was first opened in 1880 and claims to be the oldest and largest gelateria in Italy!!!
  • Last, but not least, San Crispino  at Via della Panetteria 42, very close to the Trevi Fountain.  We always go there when we visit Rome.  Servings are pretty small and there is a 2 euro surcharge to sit at the tables!!
